What your team will take away
- Employers must now proactively prevent sexual harassment, not just react to complaints.
- From 30 October 2026 the standard is "all reasonable steps", including harassment by customers and other third parties. Steps must fit your workplace setting—adapt templates to your local procedures.
- Tolerating low-level "banter" creates legal and operational liability.
- Harassment includes unwanted comments, jokes, digital messages, and physical contact.
- Third-party harassment from guests, clients, or residents is a legitimate workplace hazard.
- Staff must never be told to tolerate abuse because of a customer's commercial or care value.
- Use the 4 Ds (Direct, Distract, Delegate, Delay) to intervene safely as a bystander.
- Keep a factual record of incidents if you witness or experience harassment.
